Vierge

The icon represents the Virgin Mary and :

  1. on the right, two scenes from the Old Testament;
  2. on the left, two scenes from the New Testament.

At the top left, a representation of the Lamb, immolated but still alive, faces on the right Abraham’s sacrifice. Isaac is the ancestor of Christ and at the same time the figure of the reality to come, accomplished in the mystery of Easter, in the death and resurrection of Christ, who gave his life for all mankind.
At the bottom left, the agony at the Garden of Olives where we see Jesus praying, then Jesus going to see the sleeping Apostles, faces the battle of Jacob with the angel of the Lord, just before entering Canaan, the promised land. There is a link here also because Jacob is Christ’s ancestor and “agony” means battle.
